How We Review

Every recommendation on BedGearHQ is backed by real research, hands-on experience, and a clear methodology. Here's exactly how we evaluate the products we cover.

Cole Harrison

Truck Accessories Editor · Austin, TX

Cole Harrison has been wrenching on trucks since he bought his first F-150 at 19. After 12 years of truck ownership — including a Silverado 2500HD, two Rams, and his current Tundra — he's installed just about every bed accessory, lighting kit, and towing setup on the market. Before joining BedGearHQ, Cole spent four years as a fleet maintenance coordinator for a Texas-based logistics company, managing aftermarket installations across 40+ trucks. He brings that hands-on, no-nonsense perspective to every review: if a product can't survive a Texas summer or a job site, it doesn't make the list.

1 Research & Selection

Before a single product makes our list, we spend 20-40 hours researching the category. This includes:

  • Analyzing 1,000+ customer reviews across Amazon, forums, and truck communities to identify real-world patterns — what fails, what lasts, what people actually recommend to friends
  • Reviewing manufacturer specifications for materials, weight capacities, warranty terms, and compatibility charts
  • Cross-referencing with truck forums (F150Forum, RamForumz, TundraTalk) where owners share long-term durability reports
  • Evaluating fitment data — we verify which truck years, models, and bed sizes each product actually fits, not just what the listing claims

2 Hands-On Evaluation

We evaluate products based on six core criteria, weighted by importance:

Build Quality 30%

Materials, welds, hardware, and overall construction. Can it survive daily use?

Fitment & Install 20%

How well it fits, installation difficulty, tools required, and time to complete.

Performance 20%

Does it do what it claims? Weather sealing, weight capacity, functionality.

Value 15%

Price relative to quality. A $200 product that outperforms a $400 one scores higher.

Warranty 10%

Warranty length, what's covered, and how easy claims are based on customer reports.

Customer Satisfaction 5%

Aggregate ratings, return rates, and long-term owner satisfaction from verified reviews.

3 Rating System

Every product receives a score out of 10, calculated from our weighted criteria. Here's what the scores mean:

Score Rating What It Means
9.0 – 10 Exceptional Best-in-class. Buy with confidence.
8.0 – 8.9 Excellent Strong performer with minor trade-offs.
7.0 – 7.9 Good Solid choice, especially at its price point.
Below 7.0 Not Recommended We don't publish reviews for products scoring below 7.

4 Editorial Independence

BedGearHQ earns revenue through Amazon affiliate links. When you buy a product through our links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site running.

What this means for our reviews:

  • We never let affiliate commissions influence our ratings or rankings
  • Products are ranked by merit — the #1 pick is always the product we'd buy with our own money
  • We list cons and weaknesses for every product — if it has problems, we'll tell you
  • We regularly update articles when products change, prices shift, or better options appear

5 Content Updates

Truck accessories evolve — new products launch, prices change, and manufacturers update designs. We revisit every review article quarterly to verify product availability, update pricing, and replace discontinued products with current alternatives. Every article displays its last updated date so you know the information is current.
